At Monega we follow the National Curriculum for all subjects. The curriculum contains the programmes of study and attainment targets for all subjects, at all key stages. All local authority-maintained schools in England must be teaching these programmes of study from September 2014.
Please see below for the details of the National Curriculum for Design and Technology.
In D.T. We learn about how things work and how they are made. We learn to follow a creative design process(iterative) to design something new.We learn about designers, inventors, architects, engineers and chefs. From James Dyson to Jamie Oliver.
So what exactly is the design part? Simply put Design is Something for Someone for Some purpose. D.T. Projects involve investigating things to see how they function. Through this we learn about the technology that makes things work; the simple and compound machines, the component parts and controlling mechanisms, wheels and axles, levers and linkages gears, pulleys and cams electrical control, switches and circuits, computer control through programming and code writing and the simple structures and systems.
We learn practical skills in how to make things to assemble construct and model for example; we have a wide range of K’Nex construction kits to develop our skills. We complete Design, Make and Evaluate Assignments these are purposeful real-life creative challenges to design something new for a particular user, use and purpose. At Monega we aim to encourage creative thinking and innovation through an iterative design process.
D.T. also includes food technology: cooking and nutrition we will learn how our food is grown and to cook our own food.
At Monega we use the Design & Technology Associations Scheme of work Projects on a Page to support our planning.
This year we are also participating in a girls and engineering project.
